Information

Another Great Long Distance Walking Track is under development in the tropics in Northern Australia.  We hope to develop a walking trail network of some 2,000 kilometres (about 1,250 miles), which will pass along the Eastern Cape York Peninsula.  This is one of the last pristine tropical regions in the world.  It is wild, beautiful and presently largely trackless and inaccessible.  The coast has many stunning tropical beaches lapped by the azure blue  Coral Sea, with the Great Barrier Reef running the closest it gets to the Queensland Coastline.

The Dreaming Trails derive their name from the ancient culture of the Aboriginal people who have inhabited the area for some 40,000 to 50,000 years.  Theirs is the oldest living culture in the world and many still live on Cape York.  Their knowledge and spiritual appreciation of the region is unsurpassed.

The sea teams with life, the land is rich in birdlife and other animals, while the rivers are nesting and breeding grounds for crocodiles.

In designing the trails, the Queensland Government Parks and Wildlife Service is seeking the views of people who love wilderness and walking, so we can develop a network of trails and infrastructure that best suit their needs and wishes.

By completing the survey you can help us design a world class long distance trail network. We hope that it will be a network that suits you as a walker, hiker, rambler, tramper (depending on where you come from) and will provide memorable, meaningful (perhaps even life-changing) experiences for those who walk it.

We ask between 2 and 5 minutes of your time to complete the survey.  They are largely multiple choice and need no research to complete.  No personal identifying information is asked for. Click here for our privacy statement.

If you need inspiration to help us, we have included a photo gallery of Eastern Cape York.
